Chichester Pubs

The Cattle Market Inn was located in Eastgate Square – number 14 on the map

A walking trail for Chichester pubs, inns and hotels was one of 8 trails produced by The Chichester Society in the form of leaflets with funding from the Heritage Lottery. No funds were forthcoming for reprinting the 8 leaflets, so to make them available to a wider audience they were all independently digitised and published on the Society’s website using Google maps.

The opportunity was then taken to extend digital coverage of the pubs by undertaking further research to include earlier establlishments that could be identified. The result can be viewed below.

NOTE that by ‘pubs’ we mean any establishment that is licensed to sell alcoholic drinks to members of the public who enter them for that purpose rather than to consume a meal with which drinks may be served. So, in general restaurants per se are not included in the map.

This mapping and pub details will be maintained and updated on this site alone as new information becomes available. (The main sources of information used are detailed at the end of this page)

Visitors are invited to contribute with comments or additional information via our contact form.

HOW TO USE THE MAP

A key arranged in pub number order showing names of establishments, their location and any references in the Society’s Journals, Chichester Papers or New Chichester Papers can be downloaded here.

A similar key arranged in order of the pub name can be downloaded here and one in order of street name here

NOTE that numbers 1 through 19 can be used as a walking trail as they include guidance at the end of the pub descriptions.

  1. To view the map you are recommended to enlarge it by clicking on the four-cornered symbol in the top right hand corner
  2. Use the scroll button on a mouse to zoom in and out to view the map
  3. When you click on the number of the establishment that you are interested in you are presented with images of it, or its original location, and accompanying text.
  4. Use you scroll button to move up and down to see the explantory text. There is more information on the map for some pubs than there is in either the Journal or CP No.46, particularly for the names of landlords.
  5. Click on an image to enlarge it; if there is more than one image associated with the establishment, use the arrows to see the remainder.

PRINCIPAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION

The updating of the trail initially relied almost exclusively on online sources. A main focus was to gather names of licensees/landlords. The publication ‘Chichester Pubs’ by David Middleton, Amberley Publishing 2017 was used as an aide memoire rather than a direct source for information for which the sources below were used.

The Society’s own publications
The Journal (via the Journal index which can be viewed on the Journal page)
CP No.46 ‘Some Inns and Alehouses of Chichester’ by M. J. Cutten’ 1964). A scannned copy of CP No.46 is available for download here.

Some year ago, whilst living in Chichester, I was a regular customer of the Eastgate Inn (then a Gale’s Ales pub). I remember a framed and hand drawn map by Mervyn Cutten, of all known pubs in thr City. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a copy please?

The map was reproduced in the Chichester local history Chichester Paper No 46, Some Inns and Ale Houses of Chichester by Mervyn Cutten. Although long out of print a copy might be obtainable from Kim’s Bookshop in Arundel. Alternatively a copy can be consulted at West Sussex Record office
